The green flags of a legitimate organiser
- A named, contactable host who answers questions like an adult, in full sentences, without pushiness.
- Vetting before selling. Real organisers want to know who you are before they take your money. An application or short exchange is a good sign, not an obstacle.
- Published conduct and consent rules. Every reputable event states its rules up front — door policy, phone policy, how nos work.
- Transparent pricing with a clear refund/transfer position.
- A track record: past events that real people attended, references available, consistency over years.
The red flags that should end your interest
- Payment demanded before any questions are answered.
- Guarantees of any kind — legitimate events promise a well-run evening and nothing else.
- Stock-photo glamour and vague venue details ("a luxury Dublin location") with no host identity.
- Pressure tactics: countdown timers, "only 2 couple spots left", instant-decision discounts.
- Any request for identification documents, workplace details, or anything beyond what a private party could possibly need.
The vetting conversation
Before paying anyone, email the organiser and ask three things: how the guest list is vetted, what the conduct rules are, and what happens if you arrive and want to leave early. A legitimate host answers all three happily — they've heard them a hundred times. Evasion, irritation or flattery in response tells you everything.
